Petrol Project is completing the value chain petrochemical industry
Persian Gulf Petrochemical Complementary Industries Development and Improvement Group, also named Petrol project, is taking measures for completing the value chain in the petrochemical industry, the managing director said.
“Currently, six projects are underway with a total investment of $700 million, and some of them are expected to become operational by the end of the current Iranian year [March 2024],” the Oil Ministry’s news service Shana quoted Rashid Qanei as saying.
When the Petrol project is completed, 360,000 tons will be added to the production capacity of Petrol, earning nearly $700 million in revenues annually.

Elaborating on the projects, Qanei said an emulsion-styrene butadiene rubber (ESBR) unit is being constructed at Sadaf Petrochemical Company in Asalouyeh, Bushehr Province.
The unit will help triple the production capacity of the plant’s main product, ESBR. It will have a capacity of 136,000 tons per year, half of which will be exported.
ESBR is largely used to manufacture tires and industrial rubber goods for the automotive industry.
Key equipment and machinery, including tanks, pipes and taps, as well as civil engineering services, have been provided by domestic manufacturers.
Pars and Jam petrochemical plants will supply 45,000 tons of styrene, 83,000 tons of butadiene and 25,000 tons of aromatic oils as feedstock to the project.
According to Qanei, the Arghavan Gostar Project at Ilam Petrochemical Plant in Ilam Province is also underway to convert propylene produced at the Ilam plant’s olefin unit to polypropylene, with a capacity of 150,000 tons per year.
Referring to the project under construction in Kermanshah Province, he said, “In the city of Sonqor, we are implementing a methylamine plant, which is expected to meet the needs of various industries, including the health industry.”
Methylamine plant first time in Iran
The first of its kind in Iran, the plant will expand and complete the value chain of ammonium and methanol in the key petrochemical sector.
It will produce 23 million tons of monomethylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine per year.
A colorless gas or a liquid, methylamine is used for making pharmaceuticals, insecticides, paint removers, surfactants and rubber chemicals.
Qanei also noted that the construction of a polyaluminum chloride unit is also underway at Urmia Petrochemical Company in Urmia, West Azarbaijan Province,
The product of the unit will be used in water treatment and industrial wastewater industries. The PAC unit will have an annual capacity of 20,000 tons.
Currently, Iran imports PAC from China, which is of low quality. The unit’s completion will make Iran self-sufficient in its production.
PAC is a water chemical made up of aluminum, oxygen, hydrogen and chlorine. It is a yellow water soluble solid. The chemical has a variety of industrial uses, but is primarily used in the processes of flocculation in water treatment industries.
It is one of the most efficient water treatment chemicals widely used in both potable water and wastewater treatment because it provides high coagulation efficiency and has the widest pH and temperature application ranges compared to other water treatment chemicals.
Qanei further said the Petro-Armand Chemical Plant is under construction near Lordegan Petrochemical Company.
Located in Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province, it is the largest crystal melamine production complex in the country with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year.
The facility is fed with molten urea and liquid ammonia, which will be supplied by the Lordegan urea plant.
Another ongoing project, implemented for the first time in the country, is the caustic soda flakes (sodium hydroxide flakes) production plant in Mahshahr, Khuzestan Province.
Caustic soda flakes are obtained by evaporating qualified liquid caustic soda produced by membrane technology and used in paint, glass, ceramics, fuel cell and cosmetic production. The paper, pulp and cellulose industries are also major users of caustic soda flake.
Petrol project is a public holding company that manages natural gas processing plants and chemical factories, as well as oil and polymer companies.
